The graphite mining industry in Sri Lanka dates back to 200 years with its boom periods during the First and Second World Wars. The labour-intensive graphite production and its export in raw form kept falling since then, reaching 3,444 tons in 2012 from 35,000 metric tons per annum in the 1940s.
The novel patented chemically exfoliated Graphene facility based in Sri Lanka uses graphite from the mines in Ragedara, Kahatagaha, and Bogala. The natural graphite from the local mines are rich in Carbon, an average of 90%-96% with it reaching as high as 99.6%, and has often been dubbed the “best graphite in the world”.
A model for the origin of graphite occurrences of Sri Lanka is discussed in the light of recent views on the geologic history of Sri Lanka. The three modes of graphite occurrences in Sri Lanka are: (i) as disseminated flakes in the country rocks, (ii) as lenses, pods and vugs, and (iii) as veins occupying fractures in rocks.

Sri Lanka contributes to 7% of the graphite requirement in the global market. Mining and quarrying activity contributed about 2.7% to Sri Lanka’s GDP in 2017. In the first quarter of 2018, the output value of mining and quarrying was an estimated $ 625 million with a reported 0.6% growth rate compared to the first quarter of 2017.

The company’s PureGRAPH range of graphene powders are made from high-purity raw graphite sourced from a graphite mine owned by the Sri Lankan government. It announced this morning that it had purchased a further 500 tonnes of graphite from Kahatagaha Graphite Lanka Limited (KGLL), extending its relationship with the government body.
Sri Lanka currently produces (I believe) about 5,000 tpa of graphite. The mines are all small scale unmechanised underground operations using airleg stoping. A few of the operators have already produced graphene from their graphite and most are planning to increase output.
